Trauma Centre Trauma Sensitive Yoga (TCTSY) is an empirically validated, clinical intervention for complex trauma or chronic, treatment-resistant post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). While TCTSY incorporates yoga-based movements and physical postures, the emphasis is not on performance or achieving the "correct" pose. Instead, the practice centres on each participant's internal experience, encouraging awareness of the body's sensations and fostering personal choice. Through reconnecting with the body's felt sense, participants are supported in rebuilding the connection between body and mind, strengthening self-awareness, and cultivating a sense of agency—qualities that are often disrupted by traumatic experiences. Unlike traditional yoga classes, TCTSY is not focused on fitness or flexibility. The practice is accessible to everyone, and no prior yoga experience is required. Key elements include: A safe, inclusive, and non-judgemental environment that supports healing. Use of invitational language (e.g. "If it feels right for you, you may choose to...") that honours autonomy and choice. Slow, mindful movements that fosters body awareness and self-trust. No hands-on adjustments unless explicitly requested by the participant. Consistent session structure and routines to support safety and predictability . Grounding practices to support nervous system regulation and emotional well-being.
